Brazil’s stock exchange is scheduling a night shift for trading Bitcoin futures.

In a groundbreaking move, B3, Brazil’s leading stock exchange, has declared its intention to launch a night trading session. This innovative initiative, set to kick off in the latter half of this year, was announced in a report by local news agency Folha de São Paulo.

B3’s Night Trading Session: A Bold Move in Brazil’s Leading Stock Exchange

The night session, scheduled from 18:30 to 21:45 (UTC-3), will exclusively feature the trading of two futures contracts: Ibovespa, Brazil’s benchmark stock index, and Bitcoin.

B3’s President, Gilson Finkelsztain, attributed this strategic decision to the growing interest of retail investors in market participation beyond traditional hours. “There are many individuals eager to trade at the day’s end. We view this as an opportunity to address operational backlogs, despite the associated increased costs and risks,” Finkelsztain stated at a press conference on January 18.

Finkelsztain underscored the importance of testing this novel structure to assess its impact on market liquidity. He also disclosed that discussions were underway about extending the regular trading session by an hour. This proposal, however, received mixed responses due to concerns about liquidity and volume distribution over an extended period. “This is more art than science. We’re committed to testing and adapting as necessary,” he added.

While the Brazilian stock exchange’s attention to crypto assets is noteworthy, Finkelsztain clarified that their primary focus currently is on strengthening the traditional capital market infrastructure.

B3 Digitas: Pioneering Crypto Exchange Launch

In a related development, B3 Digitas, the digital subsidiary of Latin America’s largest stock exchange, launched a crypto exchange in June last year. This platform enables direct trading of Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Litecoin, and XRP.

This pioneering initiative by B3 is a testament to the evolving landscape of global finance, demonstrating the potential for markets to adapt and innovate in response to investor needs. It serves as an inspiration for other financial institutions worldwide to explore and embrace change.
